Community plays a key part in helping to eliminate domestic violence. Underground Railroad, Inc. welcomes volunteer time, talent and financial contributions to support the critical need for our programs in Saginaw County.

For the women receiving services:
• Hair cut/style certificates for women

For moms with new babies:
• New Baby Bags: diaper bag filled with basic items

For families in Transitional Supported Housing or families moving out on their own:

Permanent Subsidized Houses:
• Outdoor table & chairs for 6 homes
• New home starter kits: flash light, plunger, basic tool kit, snow shovel, welcome mat

For guest rooms in the shelter, permanent items to make it feel more like home (11 rooms):
• Two totes in each room to secure food items
• Lamps for each room
• Washable rugs for rooms
• Pictures for rooms (no glass)
• Plastic drawer units
• Alarm clocks w/radio
• Televisions (small)
• DVD/VCRs

Miscellaneous permanent items needed for the shelter:
• Baby gates (2 – 3)
• New backboard for basket ball hoop
• Pack & plays (2- 3)
• Potty training seats
• Step stools for kids for sinks and drinking fountains (4)
• Booster seats for dining room (5)
• Microwaves for kitchen & dining room (2)
• Rubbermaid utility cart
• Ironing boards (2)
• Irons (2)

Miscellaneous items needed for shelter guests:
• Sleepwear for adults and children
• Slippers
• Socks
• Underwear
• Large bath towels
• Pillows

Barth Child Care could use the following:
• More play ground equipment
• Murals for the walls
• Play pens (2)

Community Education/Outreach:
• New agency banner for information tables
• Wheeled carriers for supplies
• Storage bins for supplies

Putting a Value on Non-Cash Donations

At Underground Railroad, we would say donations of clothing and household goods (non-cash items) are invaluable. That's because we know how they can change the lives of people in our community, and we encourage you to keep the donations coming.

However, the IRS has established requirements for claiming a total deduction of over $500. Donations are to be reported at their "fair market value." In most cases, the fair market value of household goods and used clothing is going to be much less than what the donor paid for them. An indication of the value of donated items is the price that buyers actually pay in consignment or thrift shops.

To assist donors who itemize deductions in determining the "fair market value" of non-cash donations, Underground Railroad has created a form to complete and keep for tax records. There's a copy of the form in this newsletter. It's the donors' responsibility to record the number and value of the items donated. Our staff will continue to issue a receipt acknowledging that the donation was received when it is dropped off. We will not be able to verify the number of items or the quality of the items. We'll leave that to you.
